Chapter 1765 - 1764: Urged Again and Again
Chapter 1765 - 1764: Urged Again and Again
Could it be he thinks Rao Linger hasn't been provoked enough, that he has to piss her off to death before he'll loosen his mouth? When Rao Linger heard that, she cried even harder. What banquet, it was a hell-begotten banquet. Rao Linger had completely lost any desire to attend.
Just when the woman's mood had hit rock bottom, Tang Rao was at his peak, strutting around with his swagger practically shooting eight feet into the air. Once he got happy, whoever he ran into, he just had to say hello.
"Hi there, I'm new here. I belong to your young lady."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm here to serve your young lady. Women, you know, with that… that stuff, it's no good always going out or staying home all pent up alone, so I'm here to share the burden for her!"
"Of course she likes me. If she didn't like me, how could she do something like that to me?"
...
Ever since he got chummy with a few house servants of the Rao Family and they were all pally-pally, Tang Rao had gone all out and turned Rao Linger's reputation into a complete mush of bad press.
"Did the young lady really do those worse-than-an-animal things to you?"
The house servants clearly knew they were gossiping about their master behind her back. If she found out, they'd definitely get chewed out, but you really couldn't blame them. Tang Rao's storytelling just now had been way too good, downright vivid.
They had obviously reminded themselves already, again and again, absolutely don't listen, absolutely don't listen. But every time they thought, just a little bit won't hurt. So they kept listening, and before they knew it, they were dragged along by Tang Rao's rhythm and started gossiping with him in private.
"Of course. You think your young lady is some saint? Let me tell you, once a woman gets going in that way, she can be even scarier than us men. So sometimes you'd better keep your distance from your young lady, or you'll get hit by disaster for no reason."
When he got to the tense and crucial bits, Tang Rao even shushed them with a gesture, signaling that whatever was said here stayed here. Once this matter passed, just let it pass. Don't spread it, or if Rao Linger heard, she'd blow her top.
"I'm only laying out these private matters for you because I treat you guys like brothers. If it were anyone else, I wouldn't mention a word. You're not going to betray me and run around blabbing about what happened between me and your young lady, right?"
"'Course not. Do we look like that kind of people to you?"
The men pledged right to Tang Rao's face that they absolutely wouldn't tell. But what they promised out loud and what they thought inside were two completely different things. In their hearts they were already over the moon, and had even come up with several versions of how to spread this story outside.
"You don't look like it either. Anyway, time for dinner. You guys keep playing, I can't keep up with you. My stomach's been playing the empty-city stratagem for ages."
He'd already achieved his goal. You could tell just from their eyes; however clever they were, could they outplay Tang Rao?
Tang Rao could completely keep joy and anger off his face. How many of these people could really do that? Probably not a single one.
"What do you think about what that new guy said—how much of it is true and how much is fake?"
After Tang Rao left, the few house servants who had been in the Rao Family for longer didn't immediately disperse. Instead, they found a more secluded place and started chatting again.
"I don't think he'd lie to us. He gets nothing out of lying to us, there's no need."
Zhang Lin spoke first.
He'd observed Tang Rao for quite a while, and had always thought the kid was pretty solid. Even now, he still stuck to his first impression.
"Maybe he's just trying to stir up a crowd. How much time do we house servants even get with the young lady? What kind of person she is, we can't see everything just by looking. Better not follow along and make wild guesses."
Zou Xun did not agree with Zhang Lin. He felt Tang Rao's words were really not very credible. After all, the guy was just a newcomer to the Rao Family. On what grounds should he believe him right away after hearing only one side?
"That's true. But even as just a story, I can't help suddenly thinking of our young lady. Look at how she's so gentle and refined on the surface, but when she acts, you really can't judge by appearance. From what that kid meant, our young lady's an unmarried girl, but when she plays around outside, she's no worse than a man."
Tang Rao, who had "left" a long time ago, was actually just hiding nearby. He was cracking melon seeds while listening to what they were saying in private.
"I just said, it might all be made up by the new guy. We heard it, so we heard it, but it's not exactly something glorious. Even if it's true, it's got nothing to do with us. Scatter, scatter. If we alarm the steward, he'll make us pay."
Right, in their excitement, they'd completely forgotten about the magical existence that was the steward.
The time for the Lin Family's banquet arrived in the blink of an eye. From the last unhappy parting to today, Tang Rao had been living free and easy in the little villa, while Rao Linger had been suffering every single day.
She wanted to go find Tang Rao at every moment, to demand an explanation from him. But every time she finally made up her mind to take a step, another voice would ring in her ears, immediately reminding her that it was Rao Linger herself who had told Tang Rao she never wanted to see him again.
It had only been a few days and she suddenly wanted to go looking for Tang Rao. Regardless of the reason, if she just rushed over like that, wouldn't it make her seem a bit too unreserved as a girl?
To look for him or not? If she found him, and he didn't apologize or explain, what could Rao Linger do about it?
If she didn't go, she'd been bottling this up for so long already. If she didn't find a way to vent, and the volcano erupted, the damage would be worse than anything.
"Go call Tang Rao over for me. Tell him that after resting for so many days, your young lady wants him to come fulfill his duty and properly be a qualified lackey."
Rao Linger couldn't think of any other way. The only excuse she could come up with didn't even feel that convincing, but she could only try her luck—see if she could run into Tang Rao and, "by accident," get him to come over and properly wait on her, serve her.
Before, Rao Linger hadn't thought much about how to torment him. Now that she was sending a servant to look for Tang Rao, her head suddenly filled with countless methods to torture him.
"Miss, he said a gentleman's word is as hard to recall as four galloping horses. It was you who said you didn't want to see him again. He asked me to tell you that unless you invite him personally, he won't take a single step out the door."
"What? He wants me to invite him personally? What more does he want? I'm not going!"
Rao Linger rejected it outright without even thinking.
"So you really don't want him to be your lackey anymore?"
The servant asked kindly, reminding Rao Linger.
