Chapter 264 Confirmed
Chapter 264 Confirmed
There are still ten days until the subspace channel opens, Governor's Mansion.
After the nun threw the report on the table, Howard picked it up and took a look. It was the minutes of the highest meeting of Karenya Star three days ago. Howard glanced through it. Although the second half of the minutes was missing, the remaining part was all about the governor using the nun's investigation results to frantically claim to regain his voice.
This is probably the reason why the nun was angry. She investigated the incident out of her sense of responsibility, but in the governor's words, the nun seemed to have become his vassal, and everything was done in accordance with his orders.
The nun didn't care who benefited from this incident or who got the credit, but it was hard for her to accept that what was originally a noble act out of responsibility had become a tool for others to use.
"That's impressive," Howard said after he finished going through the records. "So what are those nobles hiding from you?"
"If I were truly powerful, things wouldn't have turned out like this," Esric said. He then apologized to the nun, "Lord Archangel, please understand why I did this. For the benefit of the empire, you wouldn't be reluctant to sacrifice your honor, would you?"
The nun had nothing to say.
"According to the minutes, you held this meeting four days ago, and that day was also..." Howard felt a sudden sense of unreality as he spoke. This was the day Drago and Freya's psychic clash triggered the Warp vortex that swept them here. It felt as if a lot had happened during that time. He had been caught in several crises, with humans, orcs, and the Eldar all in chaos on this planet. Yet, judging by time, only four days had truly passed.
"And that was the day you decided to launch the final offensive..." Howard finally continued, "Although you said you disagreed with this, it was pushed forward and happened anyway. What happened next?"
"You asked me to prove I'm trustworthy, and I've already done so, but you haven't proven yourselves trustworthy yet." Esrick glanced at May without concealing anything as he spoke, then added, "This matter is confidential. If you can't prove you're trustworthy, I won't tell you, even if you kill me."
The nun's palm lit up with spiritual light again. "I don't need to hear what's going on in your mind."
Here, the nun actually just wanted to scare the other person, and the psychic light in her hand was just a harmless spark.
Her psychic power was not strong, and her control was not precise enough. She was not yet capable of such technical work as psychic soul searching, and she was always hesitant about using psychic powers. If she really wanted to pry open the young man's mouth, she would not use this method... If she really wanted to, she would probably kidnap Esrick and hide him to physically torture him.
"Stop!" Howard, unaware of the truth, stopped the nun in time. He then leaned closer to the nun's ear and said, "It doesn't look like he has any major problems at the moment. Let's show him the two things Mei gave you first."
Howard knew that Esrick could hear what he said, so he did it on purpose. If the nun played the good guy, he would play the bad guy.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" the nun asked in a low voice.
"We can't read what's inside, and Mei can't do anything about it now, so why not let him try?" Howard said. In fact, he knew that Ohm Messiah should be able to read the chip he dug out from the oil man, but the nuns and the elves would know the contents of the chip sooner or later, so it would be unnecessary for him to do so.
So after a brief hesitation, the nun listened to Howard and took out the chip and key.
"What is this?" Esrick asked, knowing nothing about the nun's experience.
"These are the keys and chips we recovered from a dead Mechanic Priest," Howard explained, signaling the Sister not to interrupt. "Your reckless attack trapped the Sisters of Battle, the Sisters of Silence, and the Astra Militarum in the Ork-controlled area. If it weren't for the Eldar's rescue, they might have perished."
"They're still alive," Esrick said.
"What? You don't seem very surprised?" Howard asked.
"Three days ago, the communications officer at Blackwater Fortress received a very unclear message. He couldn't identify the source of the message, but he still reported it to me." Esrick looked at the nun and said, "Heltala, I recognized your voice, so I have always believed that you would not sacrifice yourself so easily."
Then Esrick changed his tone and said in a more relaxed tone, "But your appearance here really exceeded my expectations. I thought you would try to contact me again, but I didn't expect you to come back."
Howard's expression suddenly became a little strange.
Because what Esrik said was very strange. As Charandi said, their hiding place was shrouded in electromagnetic interference from the Orks' psychic energy. Logically, the Sister's communication should not have been able to be sent out, not to mention that the Eldar prophet later directly drove a disruptive Warp creature out of the Sister's assembled communication device.
But the fact is that the nun really sent out the message for help. With the interference of orc psychic power and subspace creatures, the probability of this happening is so high that you can buy a lottery ticket.
"After being trapped, Sister Sister, Miss Mei, and I tried to leave the Orc-controlled area with light luggage to seek your help. Due to some unexpected circumstances, we entered an unknown cave. There, we saw the corpses of Orcs and Astra Militarum scattered everywhere. This chip and key were obtained from the body of a Mechanical Priest who died in battle with the Astra Militarum."
When Howard mentioned "entering an unknown cave," Esrick's expression changed immediately. When he added that the Astra Militarum and the Mechanical Priests were all dead, a trace of bitterness and helplessness appeared on the young governor's face. After listening to Howard's story, Esrick said:
"I can tell you what you want to know, but you must answer me a question directly."
Howard: "Go ahead."
"I don't want you to answer, I want them to answer," Esrick said. "That is, how exactly are you, a human of unknown origin, connected to this matter? You're obviously not from Karenya, so how did you get here? We haven't detected any flying objects landing on Karenya recently."
This question immediately stumped both the nun and Howard. Howard looked at the nun and the nun looked at Howard. Both of them knew that they must not let the governor know how he came here.
"Mr. Howard is here with us." May finally stepped forward to help. "The prophecy we received indicates that Mr. Howard will play a huge role in this matter."
Mei added, "When we arrived on this planet, we deliberately avoided your detection system, so you didn't notice us."
The nun looked at the elf, her eyebrows almost twisted together, but in the end she did not expose the lie.
The reactions of the nuns and the Eldar certainly did not escape Esrick's eyes, but since the nuns were willing to help the Eldar conceal the truth at this time, he thought that this was enough to show that this human could be trusted.
"Come with me, I'll take you to see someone," said Esrick.
