Chapter 37 The Rain Stopped
Chapter 37 The Rain Stopped
The five walkie-talkies Lu Yuan and his team used were chosen by Gu Nanfeng from a stockpile in Lu Yuan's space. They were the most cost-effective models available on the market, each with a main unit that could control the power on and off of the other units. This main unit was with Gu Nanfeng. Actually, Lu Yuan had even better ones, but since they were coming to the municipal security base, it wouldn't be appropriate to bring anything too overpowered, so they chose something more conventional.
"Can you hear me?" Gu Nanfeng's voice came from the walkie-talkies in the pockets of the other four people.
"Brother Gu, please speak." Zhong Qiang had always played the role of the lowest-ranking member in the team, and everyone else in the team was "brother" in his eyes, including Lu Yuan, who was weaker than him in combat. Rather than "brother," he actually wanted to call Lu Yuan "dad."
"Yes, I can hear you, Brother Gu," Lu Yuan replied.
"Alive." After a while, Yang Xiao's voice came through.
Pei Sihao didn't speak, but Gu Nanfeng saw him standing opposite him through the observation window and continued, "I just spoke with Professor Lin. The 8-hour incubation period has passed. He said to observe for a while longer, and if there are no unexpected events, we should be able to lift the restrictions by 8 or 9 a.m. tomorrow."
The four people behind the walkie-talkie remained silent. Although the atmosphere was still tense, they all knew that passing the eight-hour incubation period meant they hadn't ingested excessive amounts of viral gas, but being locked up for observation still posed a certain risk, so they couldn't be happy at all.
"Heh, if I'd known, I would have preferred to stay in the dorm forever." After a long pause, Pei Sihao's voice came through the walkie-talkie. He had thought a lot during the six hours he had been alone. If he had known he would face the danger of turning into a zombie, he would have really preferred to stay in the dorm forever.
"No way, Brother Pei, you can't abandon us. You should at least take us with you and stay in this villa until the end of time." Zhong Qiang declared that he would cling to him tightly and never let go.
There was no reply from the walkie-talkie, only Pei Sihao's soft laughter, which eased the atmosphere slightly. The group chatted about this and that, although they missed the big villa, they had "saved" the entire G City base, even though no one here knew that.
DAY67
The second round of viral rain has been falling for three whole days. Fortunately, the city's central hospital is located on higher ground, so there was no standing water in the base. Around 10 a.m., Professor Lin and Professor Wang arrived with their team again. After a series of checks, the remaining twenty-odd people in the isolation area were released from quarantine.
However, because the virus rain is still falling, even after the restrictions are lifted, they can only return to their dormitories and are restricted to moving around within the dormitory area.
This was difficult for Qin Yuan. He and Lin Yun had only visited each other's dormitories, so their own dormitories were safe. If they returned, the other soldiers in their dormitories would have to undergo a form of soft quarantine. Therefore, the researcher who had escorted them suggested that the two of them stay in a separate room, which made the talkative Qin Yuan understandably uncomfortable.
When Lu Yuan and the others came out of their isolation room, Qin Yuan saw their walkie-talkies. He coaxed and pleaded with the soft-hearted Lu Yuan to give them the walkie-talkies, saying that this way he and Lin Yun wouldn't be bored and could chat with them.
Lu Yuan didn't care. He could take another one for himself when he got back to his dorm, so he simply gave it to Qin Yuan.
Then, escorted by researchers in protective suits, the group returned to their dormitory.
Back in the dormitory, Yang Xiao noticed that the doors and windows had been reinforced with an extra layer, improving the sealing. He wasn't sure if all the dorms had been reinforced, or if it was only the dorms with their 20-person group.
Clearly, lessons were learned from this incident. The newly added doors and windows, when closed, create a sealed space in the room. Moreover, Pei Sihao discovered that these doors and windows are electric, meaning that if anyone in their room turns into a zombie, the command center can immediately seal off the room.
"Heh, there are other devices here." A square iron frame had been added to the side of the door. Pei Sihao's family were all soldiers, so he knew what kind of mechanism it was at a glance. If the people inside turned into zombies, this cannon would open and fire automatically. Although they were now free, they were still being guarded against, and this feeling was not good at all.
Similarly, Lin Yun and Qin Yuan found the same thing when they arrived at their new dormitory. Moreover, their belongings from their original dormitory were also packed up and placed in this double room. The two of them were more composed than Lu Yuan and the others. After packing their things, they settled in without any worries.
Before the virus rain had even stopped, Lin Yun's transfer order came down. He was transferred from the captain of 0922 to the deputy captain of 0788, and the former deputy captain of 0922 was promoted to captain of 0922.
In the dormitory, Qin Yuan used the walkie-talkie given to him by Lu Yuan to introduce their new deputy captain.
"Actually, it would be better if we seven formed a new squad, so as not to harm the other soldiers." Pei Sihao's voice came out unhurriedly from the walkie-talkie. In fact, the five of them were secretly having a meal to celebrate their survival. No one really cared what Qin Yuan said.
However, Pei Sihao's words were a wake-up call for Qin Yuan and Lin Yun. Although they were assigned to 0788 because 0788 had the fewest members, losing them was still a life. It was not appropriate to assign them to the few people who had been quarantined.
So the two of them reported to the command center from their dormitory, wanting to organize Lu Yuan and the other four, and ask other people who had been quarantined if they were willing to join, to form a new supply team.
But the command headquarters did not agree, on the grounds that civilians should not be allowed to take risks. This reason left them speechless. Civilians were taking risks, but their comrades were not? Moreover, Lu Yuan and his team were here voluntarily. Even if no one else was willing to come, a seven-person team would have been fine.
DAY68
Even after the four-day rain of the virus finally stopped, Qin Yuan and Lin Yun's reports were still not approved. Qin Yuan was almost driven to madness by being cooped up in his dorm room.
The viral rain stopped on the morning of the fourth day. After the rain stopped, the zombies outside the base went into hiding again, just like before the rain. No one knew how many zombies were hiding outside the base.
As soon as the rain stopped, the cleaning robots in the base started cleaning mode, sucking up all the accumulated rainwater, drying the ground quickly, and then continuously spraying various disinfectants.
By noon, the survivors in the base could go to the canteen for lunch from the underground garage and the sky bridge. After eating compressed biscuits for several days, they were eager to have a good meal.
But the twenty-odd people who had been quarantined before weren't so lucky. Qin Yuan and Lin Yun invited Lu Yuan and the other five to walk from the covered bridge to the cafeteria, when they saw two of the people who had been quarantined together being stopped by the guards on the covered bridge.
