Chapter 55 The hairless dog was a little self-conscious.
After returning home, Shu Yun had Gu Jun hold down the puppy's limbs while she slowly cut off all its fur with scissors. Without the fur to trim it, the little guy was so thin that he was just skin and bones. His pink skin looked like a little pink mouse in Gu Jun's large hands, which was rather comical.
After cleaning and applying medicine to the exposed wounds, Shu Yun carefully bandaged them and then mixed the medicine with rice water for the puppy to eat.
What comforted Shu Yun was that the puppy finally didn't vomit after eating this time, and its appetite improved a lot.
After surviving an illness, the little guy became especially attached to Shuyun, as if it knew that she was its savior. Usually, when Shuyun was working in the yard, it would circle around Shuyun's feet. If you weren't careful, you could easily step on it, and it would whimper when it hurt. But it never learned its lesson. After the pain subsided, it would follow Shuyun around eagerly again.
Shu Yun likes to sit under a tree to rest. She moves a bamboo chair and a small wooden table, puts a cup of chrysanthemum tea and a plate of snacks on it, and can spend a quiet afternoon there.
The puppy, however, was not one to stay still. After it recovered, it became exceptionally lively. It squatted at Shu Yun's feet, raised its little head, and sniffed the sweet scent in the air. It rolled around next to Shu Yun, its belly showing from time to time.
If it still had fur, it would naturally be very cute, but without fur, its cuteness was reduced to a bone, and it looked quite comical. In this flash of inspiration, Shu Yun finally decided on a name for the puppy: A Xi. Its cute appearance was adorable, corresponding to the character "Xi" (喜).
Once, Axi sneaked out of the courtyard when the gate was not closed. Shuyun remembered that several families in the residential compound kept dogs, so she went with Axi. However, it went out excitedly but came back dejectedly. It didn't go to Shuyun for pets or hugs. The dog huddled back in its kennel in loneliness and didn't come out until it was time to eat.
Shu Yun called several times, but A happy ignored her. Shu Yun then suspected that other dogs had seen its silly...cute appearance and mocked it, making it feel inferior.
Shu Yun affectionately patted the dog's head. There was nothing she could do but wait for the dog's fur to grow back slowly.
To comfort Ah-happy's wounded heart, Shu-Yun chopped up a piece of pork belly that hadn't been used up from the last banquet and made cabbage and meatball soup. It was a light and simple soup, with Shu-Yun only adding a little salt, yet it was exceptionally delicious.
She cracked an egg into the meat sauce and stirred it thoroughly. The resulting meatballs lost their loose, crumbly texture and gained a more elastic feel. With just this dish of rice porridge, Shu Yun felt she could easily finish a whole bowl.
The irresistible aroma of meat was so enticing that even the melancholy little dog couldn't resist. It obediently squatted at the kitchen doorway, its tail wagging so high that it swept the area under its rear end clean.
Even though Ah happy was very hungry, it still didn't step into the kitchen. This was something Shu Yun taught it after it recovered. Having been punched by Gu Jun's fists so many times, Ah happy had developed muscle memory and dared not enter or leave the kitchen without Shu Yun's command.
Shu Yun scooped a bowl of meat broth into the puppy's bowl and mixed in some leftover rice. The puppy buried its head in its food, oblivious to the rice grains sticking to its little black nose, and wiggled its growing body.
Following the aroma of meat, Granny Jiang arrived at Shu Yun's door. She swallowed hard, knocked on the door, and seeing it wasn't closed, stepped inside. "What delicious food are you making? It smells so good. I haven't had meat in years, I'm really craving it." Her eyes glanced at Shu Yun by the well, her meaning clear.
Shu Yun shook her hands. "Really? You're so pitiful. But Battalion Commander Jiang's monthly salary isn't low. How come he's never bought you meat? You can get it right in the canteen. Your son's actions are really wrong. When I see his superiors, I'll definitely report this to them and get justice for you, Grandma."
Seeking justice? What justice? Granny Jiang was terrified by the implication in Shu Yun's words. This... this person was jealous of their good life and wanted to sabotage it!
She hurriedly waved her hand, "No, Xiaoyun, I remembered wrong. I ate it this year too."
Shu Yun: "I see. Then my meatballs are indeed nothing special."
Granny Jiang was startled and turned to leave. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the meat soup in the dog's food bowl that she had been longing for. Instantly, her mouth watered, and she said with heartache, "How could such good food be wasted by a dog?"
Shu Yun put on a stern face, "I'm willing."
Ah happy seemed to sense Granny Jiang's covetous gaze, and her protective nature was revealed. She bared her teeth at Granny Jiang and ran towards her.
Granny Jiang was terrified and hurriedly fled from Shu Yun's house. She tripped over the threshold on the way and limped away as fast as she could.
Shu Yun praised, "Not bad, A-happy, I'll give you an extra meal tonight."
The meatball soup was still bubbling in the pot, its aroma wafting further and further with the steam. Granny Jiang smelled the meat but couldn't eat it, so she was anxious and scratched her head. Seeing Kong Ping lying in bed sleeping, she was displeased and yanked the covers off her. "Serves you right! Our Jiang family must have had eight lifetimes of bad luck to marry a lazy woman like you. Get up!"
Kong Ping stood up timidly, and then Granny Jiang shoved an empty bowl into her hand. "You, go ask the Shu family next door for a bowl of meatball soup. If you can't get it, you can leave it there."
Kong Ping didn't want to go; she couldn't bring herself to say it. "Mom, this isn't a good idea."
Granny Jiang pushed the person out, saying, "What's wrong with that?" She casually picked a few scallions from her field, saying with a pained expression, "It's not like I'm asking you to beg for food for nothing. Let's trade."
Kong Ping stood at Shu Yun's door for a long time, holding an empty bowl in one hand and three scallions in the other, before she dared to gently knock on the door.
Shu Yun was a little confused when she opened the door and saw who it was. Kong Ping hadn't left the house since giving birth, so this was the first time Shu Yun had met her.
"Is something the matter?" Shu Yun asked.
Kong Ping opened and closed her mouth several times, and her eyes reddened as Shu Yun's brows furrowed more and more, as if she had suffered some great injustice.
Shu Yun: "Stop, just say what you want to say. Don't cry in front of me, it makes it seem like I'm bullying you."
"No." Kong Ping's voice choked even more. Shu Yun lost her patience and reached out to close the door, but Kong Ping was quick, sticking a foot in and handing Shu Yun a bunch of scallions, their leaves rotten from being squeezed so tightly:
"These are from our own garden, feel free to try them. What did you cook today? They smell delicious."
Shu Yun snorted twice and glanced at her sideways, "Didn't you know? Otherwise, why did you come here? I don't want these scallions either, take them back and eat them yourself."
"No." Kong Ping didn't move her feet, her eyes brimming with tears. "I... my family doesn't have anything else of value."
Seeing that she was thin and small, and that she was in postpartum confinement, Shu Yun sighed and said coldly, "Just wait and see."
He took Kong Ping's bowl and went inside, and soon ladled a small bowl of soup for her.
Kong Ping hurriedly took it, and when she saw that the soup was crystal clear, there wasn't a single piece of meat or even a cabbage leaf in sight. She couldn't help but feel a little disappointed. "Just soup?"
Hey, you're complaining about something that's been given to you for free? Shu Yun raised an eyebrow, "If you don't want it, just give it back to me."
"Yes, yes!" Kong Ping darted out like a monkey, as if afraid that Shu Yun would snatch it away.
Shu Yun was speechless, regretting her momentary soft-heartedness.
