Chapter 117 After Losing His Temper, He Turns the Tables

Shu Yun was feeling unwell and became more emotional. After a round tear rolled down her cheek, the tears flowed like a tap that couldn't be stopped.

Shu Yun wrapped herself up in the blanket and sobbed inside, her tears blurring her vision and soaking a large patch of her pillow.

Gu Jun was startled when he heard the crying. He quickly pushed open the door and went in, asking anxiously, "What's wrong? Xiaoyun. Are you feeling unwell?"

Hearing Gu Jun's concerned voice, Shu Yun perked up a little. She poked her pair of soft, white hands out from under the covers and tightly gripped Gu Jun's clothes. Between sobs, she said, "Are you angry with me? Do you find me annoying? Don't you want me anymore?"

Gu Jun found Shu Yun's words both funny and cute. Shu Yun's hands were ice-cold, so he took her hand and warmed it in his palm. He thought helplessly that he hadn't even said anything yet, so wasn't it Xiao Yun who was complaining that he was annoying and hateful? Now she was turning the tables on him.

However, Gu Jun wisely did not argue with Shu Yun at this moment. Instead, he pulled her into his arms and patted her head reassuringly.

"No, I'm not angry. I know Xiaoyun lost her temper because she wasn't feeling well. I just went outside and bought you a packet of pickled vegetables. I saw some passengers had chili sauce, and it smelled delicious, so I thought it might whet your appetite. Why don't you get up and eat some? You didn't eat anything this morning, your stomach might not be able to handle it."

As Gu Jun spoke, he gently wiped away the tears from the corners of Shu Yun's eyes. Her eyes were swollen from crying, making her look like a pitiful and adorable little rabbit. Gu Jun felt a surge of tenderness in his heart.

Shu Yun calmed down. She felt incredibly safe in Gu Jun's arms and nodded gently, "Then I'll only eat a little bit."

Gu Jun breathed a sigh of relief and quickly took the lunchbox over. "Okay, eat as much as you can."

Gu Jun opened the lunchbox and placed a packet of pickled vegetables and chili sauce in front of Shu Yun.

Shu Yun tried the chili sauce; it was fresh, fragrant, sweet, and spicy. She used her chopsticks to mix some into her rice, and the salty, crisp pickled vegetables whetted her appetite considerably.

Shu Yun said it was delicious, but she couldn't eat more than a few bites. She pushed the lunchbox toward Gu Jun and blinked, "I can't eat anymore."

Gu Jun didn't force her and slurped down the rest of Shu Yun's boxed lunch in a few bites.

He got up to leave, which startled Shu Yun, who quickly grabbed Gu Jun's sleeve. "Where are you going?"

Gu Jun was both amused and exasperated, holding up the lunchbox in his hand. "What do you think I'm going to do?"

Shu Yun, feeling dizzy, let go of his hand and said a few "ohs," "Then come back quickly."

Gu Jun waved his hand, "I know, you just finished eating. Stand up and walk around for a while to help digest. Lying down will make you feel uncomfortable."

Gu Jun nodded. Not wanting Shu Yun to worry or be afraid, he quickened his pace, poured some more hot water into the kettle, and gave it to Shu Yun to warm her hands.

Shu Yun held the water glass in her hand, the steam warming her face. She patted the spot next to her bed and invited Gu Jun, "Come on up, I'm a little cold."

Gu Jun took off his coat and covered himself with the quilt, then snuggled into the covers and hugged Shu Yun. He was warm and full of energy, and Shu Yun snuggled closer to him. Looking out the window at the scenery already dressed in winter clothes, she felt much more relaxed. The warmth and comfort eased most of her discomfort, and she gradually drifted off to sleep to the clatter of the train.

Fortunately, Shu Yun's symptoms lessened over the next two days, and she managed to stay alive on the small box of chili sauce she received in exchange.

The train slowed down considerably, and Gu Jun breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the long-awaited train platform. He gently touched Shu Yun's cheek and said, "Xiao Yun, we've arrived."

Phew, we've finally arrived!

Looking at the unfamiliar platform outside, Shu Yun felt a sense of unease, a sudden wave of unfamiliarity washing over her. She followed the bustling crowd out, while Gu Jun, carrying a suitcase in each hand, stood close to her, saying, "Hold onto my arm as we walk."

The two then boarded a bus. It was still winter and the weather was cold, so there weren't many people. Gu Jun found seats for the two of them and opened the window a crack. Fortunately, the journey wasn't long, and Shu Yun arrived at the commune while enjoying the cool breeze.

Gu Jun hired another oxcart from the commune and drove towards Huakai Brigade. The oxcart bumped along the dirt road. When it hit a pothole, Shu Yun suspected she would have jumped off the oxcart if Gu Jun hadn't been holding her. But at least she got to breathe fresh air, unlike the stuffy air and various smells on trains and buses. As Shu Yun took a breath, the cold air chilled her through her nostrils and into her heart, making her feel refreshed.

Gu Jun was worried that she would get aches and pains from the jolting, so he held the luggage with one hand and supported Shu Yun's back with the other.

The oxcart was full of people, all from nearby brigades. Coincidentally, there were villagers from Huakai Brigade among them, and some of these villagers happened to know Gu Jun.

Gu Jun hadn't been back to his hometown for several years, but he was so handsome that almost everyone who had seen him would remember him. Therefore, an auntie from Huakai Brigade glanced at the two of them several times after they got on the bus, and after a long pause, hesitantly asked, "Isn't that Gu Jun, the second son of Gu Minsheng?"

Gu Jun looked up at the person who had come in and nodded, "Hello, Auntie."

Aunt Niu slapped her thigh excitedly after hearing this, "Oh my, I knew it! This young man is really handsome. He looks just like Gu Jun from our brigade."

She looked at the woman lying in Gu Jun's arms, "Is this your wife? Why aren't you feeling well?"

Aunt Niu looked at the woman, who was thin and had a pale face. Although she was pretty, she felt a chill run down her spine.

Gu Jun nodded and pulled her closer to him. "Yes, this is my wife, Shu Yun. She got a little carsick on the way back, but she'll be fine after a while."

Aunt Niu made a few "oh oh" sounds, watching Gu Jun take a water bottle out of his bag, blow on the steaming water, and tenderly hand it to Shu Yun's lips. She couldn't help but marvel; even the newlyweds in their brigade weren't this affectionate.

Aunt Niu is a restless person. Once she knew that it was Gu Jun from their Huakai Brigade, she kept talking all the way until she reached the village entrance.

The oxcart stopped, and people from several nearby villages got off. Gu Jun slowly helped Shu Yun down. "How are you? Are you alright?"

Shu Yun shook her head. "Much better, don't worry."

Shu Yun's words were not meant to comfort Gu Jun. It was true that although the jolting made her feel like her bones had been disassembled and reassembled, the tightness in her chest had eased considerably.

Shu Yun's face was wrapped in a scarf, her complexion was pale, but her cheeks were particularly red, obviously from the cold wind outside. Gu Jun pulled the scarf tighter, covering Shu Yun's face even more, and said with concern, "Let's go home."

He pulled Shu Yun towards home, carrying a full suitcase in one hand, not letting his wife lift a finger.
