Chapter 124 Family Meeting
Chapter 124 Family Meeting
Shu Yun and Gu Jun stayed at the Gu family home for the New Year before leaving. Instead of going directly back to the army, they went to the farm where Shu Yun's maternal grandfather, Shen Yuanshan, worked. They had originally planned to visit Shen Rujun, but the news of her pregnancy disrupted their original plans. Gu Jun didn't want Shu Yun to travel too much, so he decided to return to the army after visiting her grandfather.
The farm where the Gu family and Shen Yuanshan lived wasn't very far apart, but it still required a few stops on the train. Gu Jun was worried that Shu Yun might not feel comfortable, so he bought her a sleeper ticket. Before leaving, Wang Xiuwen also bought Shu Yun a large bag of oranges, candied fruit, and other snacks, fearing that she might not feel comfortable on the train.
However, since Shu Yun stayed in the hospital for a few days, her condition has improved a lot, and she has no reaction on the train.
After Gu Jun settled his luggage, he took out a bracelet from his pocket and handed it to Shu Yun, saying, "This is a gift from Mom before she left, she said it was a gift for you."
"A gift?" Shu Yun's hand was taken by Gu Jun, and a slightly cool jade bracelet was put on her wrist. The round and green bracelet on her fair and slender wrist not only made Shu Yun's hand look even whiter, but also made the jade bracelet look even more delicate.
Shu Yun placed the bracelet in front of the train window. The winter sun shone brightly, casting its light obliquely on the bracelet, making the jade appear even more delicate, pure, and translucent. Shu Yun touched its cool but smooth texture; it was a fine jadeite that had been around for many years. "Isn't this too expensive?"
Gu Jun: "It's alright, my sister-in-law has some too. When my younger sister gets married, Mom will give her some more."
Gu Jun had already told Shu Yun about the Gu family's situation before she went back to her hometown. Gu's mother was a local villager from Huakai Village, while Gu's father was educated and had previously worked as an accountant for a landlord. After the landlord was overthrown, he came to Huakai Village and settled there after marrying Gu's mother. In the few days they spent together, Shu Yun discovered that although Gu's father didn't talk much, he listened to his mother-in-law very much...
"You should wear it, it looks good," Gu Jun said, interrupting Shu Yun's thoughts.
Shu Yun shook her head and took the jade bracelet off her wrist. "No, this thing is fragile. It would be a shame to break it by accident. Let's put it away."
Gu Jun didn't say anything more, but just glanced at Shu Yun's wrist, wrapped the jade bracelet again with red cloth, and put it away.
The train arrived at its destination after a few stops.
Gu Jun and Yang, the farm manager, were former comrades-in-arms. They caught up and brought gifts for Yang. Then, led by Yang, they arrived at the farm. Afraid of disturbing Gu Jun, Shu Yun didn't dare to go up and speak, but just watched from a distance outside the fence.
Shu Yun had never met this grandfather from her memories, but based on the original owner's memories, she spotted the person she was looking for among the many old men and women at a glance.
Compared to how I remembered her, her hair was much whiter and her face was tanned, but thankfully she seemed to be in good spirits, chatting with the old man next to her, and appeared to be in a good mood. The cotton-padded coat she was wearing was sent by Shu Yun, but working outside in the freezing cold, no matter how warmly she was dressed, her ears were still red from the cold.
Shen Yuanshan was talking with his old partner. It was the first month of the lunar year, and he wondered if the dinner that night would be any better, at least enough to give them some oil.
As they were talking, Shen Yuanshan seemed to sense something, looked in Shu Yun's direction, his pupils widened, and the farm tools in his hands slipped from his grasp. He uttered a soft "Yunyun." Erzi's lips moved a few times, but he didn't say anything, only nodded.
They gazed at each other from afar, not saying a word, yet Shu Yun felt an overwhelming urge to cry. Gu Jun embraced Shu Yun, saying, "Don't cry."
"Mmm." But his voice trembled unusually.
Director Yang paused for a moment, then said, "I'll bring him out for you to meet him at lunchtime."
Gu Jun thanked the people, and Director Yang laughed and said, "It's nothing. You even brought me some good wine. Even if it weren't for your sake, I would still have to let you meet me just for the sake of the old wine."
At noon, as Shu Yun paced back and forth anxiously, she finally saw her grandfather from her memories. She couldn't tell whose emotions it was, and tears immediately rolled down her cheeks. Shen Yuanshan said helplessly, "Look at her, she's married now, but she's still such a pampered child, shedding tears at the drop of a hat. Isn't she afraid of being laughed at?"
Shen Yuanshan hugged his beloved granddaughter, who had grown up with him since childhood. He was filled with emotion, and when he thought of his wife and daughter who had passed away, sadness welled up in his heart. But he immediately restrained himself and said, "Come on, this is my granddaughter's husband."
Upon hearing this, Gu Jun immediately straightened his expression and took a few steps forward, almost marching in unison, which inexplicably diluted the somber atmosphere. "Grandpa, hello."
Shen Yuanshan admired soldiers. Seeing that his granddaughter had gained even more weight than before, with a rosy complexion and bright eyes, he knew that Gu Jun treated Shu Yun well. Seeing her in person, he felt much more at ease. "You two should live your lives together. Don't send me things all the time. I'm working here and I don't need anything..."
After exchanging a few more pleasantries, Shen Rushan left. Gu Jun and Shu Yun bid farewell to Director Yang and boarded the train back to their unit.
After getting off at the train station, Shu Yun took a jeep back to the military base. The moment she saw the base's gate, she breathed a sigh of relief. She was finally home. It turned out that her little home in the family compound had long since become the place where her heart belonged.
As soon as they arrived at the door, Ah Xi, who had been listlessly lying at Tian Xiufen's door, immediately perked up her ears and barked excitedly at Xiao Lu.
"Ah-happy." Shu Yun called out, and Ah-happy became even more excited. It trotted forward a few steps, raised its front paws, and the rope around its neck was pulled taut.
Hearing the noise, Tian Xiufen came out and said, "Oh, you're back."
She loosened Ah Xi's leash, and the dog ran towards Shu Yun without looking back. Tian Xiufen laughed and said, "I've been feeding you for so long for nothing."
Afraid that the dog would bump into Shu Yun, Gu Jun picked up the dog and pulled it away before A Xi rushed up. The dog lowered its head pitifully and whimpered a few times, it was hard to tell whether it was pretending to be pitiful or cursing Gu Jun.
Shu Yun patted A Xi's head, and it immediately wagged its tail happily.
Tian Xiufen stepped forward and said, "You should take Axi back quickly. In the first two days after you left, Axi thought you didn't want it anymore. It howled in the direction of your house every day. It's not a wolf. It howled in the middle of the night every day and refused to eat. It even went on a hunger strike. It took several days to finally recover some of its spirits."
Shu Yun felt very embarrassed, "It's really too much trouble for you, sister-in-law." She took out the local specialties she had brought back from her hometown in Northeast China and gave them to Tian Xiufen. Tian Xiufen also gave her some homemade local products. Only then did Shu Yun take the dog leash and go home.
Ah happy is a very intelligent dog. Gu Jun moved a chair for Shu Yun to sit on in the yard to rest, and Ah happy sniffed around her several times. As if it sensed that its owner was pregnant, it obediently lay down at Shu Yun's feet.
Shu Yun's morning sickness wasn't severe. Because she was thin and wore many clothes, no one had noticed she was pregnant even after a month of being back.
That day, Shu Yun was revising her manuscript in the office when she suddenly heard Kang Xianqin say, "Did you know? The military is coming to interview us, and I heard it's a foreign film crew!"
